Caring for a thermowood terrace with transparent oil

If thermowood is not maintained, it will gradually turn gray under the influence of UV radiation and weather. However, the gray color does not affect the wood’s resistance to decay.

Note that transparent terrace oil with UV protection and without brown pigment does not prevent natural graying, but slows down the process.

Horizontal surfaces such as terraces are subject to wear and direct weather exposure, and therefore require appropriate protective treatments to maintain the mechanical strength of the wood. In other words, regular treatment with terrace oil helps reduce cracking and extends service life.

After installation

  • To preserve the brown shade of the wood, the terrace should be treated immediately after installation with a natural brown pigmented terrace oil designed for thermally modified wood. To maintain the correct tone, we recommend reapplying every few years, depending on weather conditions and terrace use.
  • Be sure to apply oil to all sawn surfaces and edges.
  • If you want your decking to turn gray naturally, you should choose transparent terrace oil. Note that transparent oil slows down natural wood graying, so the process may take several years, and even longer in shaded areas.

Timbera thermowood can also be treated in other shades.

All Timbera decking boards undergo intensive thermal modification, making them durable and resistant to decay without additional surface treatment.

However, correct installation and additional maintenance methods will ensure the longest possible service life and preserve the impressive appearance of your project.

Surface treatment is not mandatory, but regular care and oiling will refresh the appearance of the object and make cleaning easier. Therefore:

  1. Before the summer season, we recommend cleaning and maintaining the deck.
  2. Light sanding of faded boards will remove the silvery surface color and restore the wood’s original appearance.
  3. If you want to preserve or change the tone of thermally modified wood, apply UV-resistant oil to the boards once a year.
  4. To keep the boards in their natural shade, use colorless oil without a UV filter.
  5. Oil should only be applied to clean, even, dust-free surfaces.
