Sauna care

Wood used in saunas is an organic material and requires regular maintenance.

Temperature fluctuations can lead to cracks or surface deformation. Since wood is a natural material, such changes are normal, as a sauna experiences sharp changes in temperature and humidity over short periods of time. The risk and degree of damage depend on the intensity of sauna use and the type of material chosen.

When building a new sauna, it is important to protect the wooden surfaces before the first use. To ensure the durability of the sauna, it is recommended to carry out maintenance procedures at least once a year, and more frequently if the sauna is used intensively.

  1. It is important to regularly treat all wooden parts, components, and structures of the sauna with special wood-care products to extend its service life. These products increase the wood’s resistance to dirt and moisture and make cleaning easier. In addition, such treatment improves the appearance of wooden surfaces, making them richer and brighter.
  2. Before beginning any maintenance, the interior of the sauna should be thoroughly cleaned of dust. Wipe all wooden surfaces, including benches, walls, and ceiling, with a soft brush or cloth, then apply a special cleaning agent and allow the surfaces to dry.
  3. Wood in the sauna must be protected from dirt and moisture. To ensure this protection, it is recommended to apply a special protective substance along the wood grain. For the walls and ceiling of the sauna, special moisture-resistant protective products are used; these can even be tinted, and they contain additives that protect against mold while creating a thin dirt-repellent layer on the wood.
  4. For sauna benches, a preservative is recommended. This colorless protective substance is absorbed into the wooden surface and is specifically designed for use on benches. It is important to avoid paints and varnishes in the sauna, as the wood must be able to “breathe.”
  5. During sauna maintenance, it is also advisable to periodically check the fastening of benches and supports. If necessary, tighten screws, which may loosen over time as the wood reacts to heat and humidity.
  6. Do not heat the sauna above the maximum temperature indicated by the heater manufacturer, as excessive heat can create a fire hazard and cause the wood to warp.

When considering all aspects of sauna care, thermowood stands out above other materials. It has advantages that make it an ideal choice for any sauna. Specifically, thermally modified wood is resistant to deformation, incredibly strong, reliable, and durable, withstanding significant fluctuations in temperature and being nearly unaffected by moisture.

With these advantages, sauna maintenance becomes much simpler and more effective. To make sauna care easier, always follow these simple rules during and after each sauna session: pour water only on the heater stones, not on the walls or benches, and avoid wearing wet swimwear in the sauna, as water dripping from it can damage the bench.

By following these simple rules, you will significantly extend the lifespan of your sauna and enjoy a clean, fresh, and relaxing environment every time.
